Review – Secret Key The Premium Snow Toning Cream [Upgrade]

It’s been a long time since I had reviewed a Secret Key product…but there was nothing that perked my interest until now…since most Secret Key product packaging resemble various other brands…and the prices online keep going up, so I didn’t feel interested in trying anymore products. (That being said, their products are usually decent to good quality – but every brand has their hits and misses.)

It is currently Autumn in Australia, so I decided that it would be a good season to test this out since there has been a mix of cold and hot weather recently.

First impression: Unlike the previous version,  I really liked how it applied and spread across my skin. There was definitely no need to mix it with a moisturising cream, and I applied it after using “skin/toner” to prep my face. I waited 2 hours before blotting, and it removed the sheen.

I then waited 2 more hours and found that my skin was still ‘whitened’, but required blotting again so I blotted then mixed a small amount of the Snow Toning Whitening Cream (equal parts) with the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++. I let it sit for 3 minutes before proceeding to apply my foundation.

I applied my Touch In Sol Flawless Skin Top Coat in shade 2. It did not help my foundation glide over dry patches it normally adheres to, but it did not emphasise it either. I left the house at 4:30 and got back at 1:30 AM the next day, and found that my makeup looked fine (I only blotted then applied powder once in that time.) My skin did not flare up or have excessive bumps forming.

Second use: I applied toner and (without waiting for it to fully absorb) immediately followed with the Premium Snow Toning Cream, and found that it did not spread well across my face – it seemed to stick around the section it was first applied to and looked uneven since I could not blend it out well.

When it didn’t blend, I found patches of skin which were red were not covered up/product did not adhere to those spots. I figured that it probably had to do with how I rushed into applying the cream before waiting for it to absorb.

Other uses: I continually used this day and night to really test this out. When I woke up the next morning, my skin had absorbed the white cast look it had the night before when I applied it, and my skin just had the usual oil on my face in the morning around my T-zone. My skin didn’t look any worse than it does usually – I actually expected my skin to look completely dry or feel tight.

I used it when I was at home all day (I only applied a toner and the Snow Toning cream), and found that I needed to blot after 2-3 hours. The product also sank in more naturally by that time. My skin did not look discoloured/uneven at all, and I applied another layer of the cream. It did not ball up or become cakey looking.

Price: Between 15-20 AUD (depending on the seller)

Weight: 50 ml

Positive

  • A little more hydrating that the previous version without being oily
  • Comes with a spatula
  • Easily available online
  • Immediately whitens like the previous version (kind of like regular sunscreen)
  • Makes a good makeup base
  • Mixes well with sunscreen and other products
  • Packaging looks and feels better than the original (still plastic though)
  • Does not break me out
  • Does not feel sticky

Negative

  • No english ingredients listing
  • Blotting required every two hours (but not so much when used under a drier foundation)
  • Doesn’t hydrate dry, flaky skin (but that can’t be helped since this product doesn’t target that skin concern. You can always mix it with a cream/ampoule or serum if you need to)

Rating: 3.9/5

Repurchase: Yes

Last words: I definitely like this more than the original version. Since I have dull skin tone, this product is something that I enjoy. I normally use this in the morning rather than at night, since I prefer using an oil mixed with cream/emulsion as a last step at night. I probably won’t repurchase the previous version again, since I felt more satisfied with this version.

It does have the “whitening” white cast look, but as long as you blend it in it looks okay – and over time it will absorb into your skin. I like using this under my foundation, and I will probably continue to do so in the future.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but only if this seems like something you need in your routine. It fits my needs for correcting my uneven skin tone, but I’m not sure how it will perform in summer or humid countries, since my face produces a manageable sheen after 2 hours. I personally love mixing this with a water based sunscreen before applying my makeup and I prefer using this rather than the Etude House Choux Base and similar products since it also smells more pleasant.

I think if you found the previous version drying, you should give version a try. I have combination skin, so this worked well for me. I definitely want to purchase the Secret Key Premium Milky Pack, seeing as how well this spreads compared to the old version without clogging my pores or causing my face to over-produce oil. Sorry I did not provide a swatch – the product blended in so naturally on my hand, that the difference didn’t show up on my camera.

Review – [Secret Key] Secret Kiss Face Glow CC Cushion SPF 50+ PA+++

When I first saw the Secret Key’s Secret Kiss CC Cushion, I was really eager to try it out because I love the Hera BB Cushion and how lightweight it feels and helps me apply makeup more naturally. So of course I couldn’t resist and purchased it. It was $15.90 USD (I put a lot of items in my cart so I can’t tell you exactly how much it would have been in AUD – its usually a few dollars more with the current exchange rate and after paypal takes a cut)

Weight: 13 g
Made in: Korea

First Impression: The first thing I noticed was that the diameter of the puff is smaller than Amore Pacific. The formula isn’t actually white or pink like some of the pump or squeeze tube CC Creams, it is actually coloured which makes it look more natural when applied. I was pleasantly surprised especially after my experience with other CC Creams that are popular (but I personally don’t like)

Untouched – Secret Key’s “Secret Kiss Face Glow CC Cushion” – but you can see the colour around the edges

Positive

  • Sleek packaging
  • Decent sized mirror
  • SPF 50
  • The puff is similar to Amore Pacific version
  • The formula is not as moist as the Hera BB Cushion
  • Easy to see that the product has not been used (as in the above picture)
  • Natural application – good for everyday
  • Does not break me out

Negative

  • The lid inner lid does not close as tightly as the Amore Pacific versions
  • 1 shade only (currently)
  • Won’t cover acne scars that well
  • Colour can be quite light so I try to sheer it out (Currently MAC NC 20 – 25 (still leaning more to NC 25 )
  • No refills sold online that i can find yet
  • Not good for flash photography
  • For those that want a lot of coverage you will need to use a concealor
  • Not much product
  • For the price of two you could pretty much buy Laneige CC Creams or even the BB Cushions ( just wait for a sale 😉 )

Rating: 3.7/5

Repurchase: Yes (but only if they sell refills)

Last words: I am a cushion lover because I tend to somehow be too heavy handed with BB and CC formulas when I am in a rush. With this I just press down once or twice (depending how much coverage I want) on the cushion and not have to worry about excess product. I find cushion products easy to touch up because they don’t completely set (unless powdered). So much better than the Innisfree CC  because it looks more natural and has a mirror – I now use this when I go to lunch or shopping with a friend rather than relegating it to local grocery shopping as I do with products I don’t really like 🙂 There is a slight glowing effect and looks even when applied. This reapplies pretty well – if you need powder use a VERY light touch of it on the T-zone (or wherever necessary) or it will cake up if you try to reapply on top.

Try this if you want light coverage (evening out redness) or as a base under foundation or BB Cream, but not if you want medium to full coverage (or you can always use a concealor) and keep some blotting sheets with you. I have combination skin and it’s fine for me but I don’t think it will really suit super oily skin (but you can always throw some powder on top to help it last longer)

Review – Secret Key Gold Racoony Hydro Gel Eye & Spot Patch

I was eyeing this product ever since I fell in love with the Beyond God of Patches line because I love the effect but I try to save where I can. I haven’t tried any other patches that have come in a container, so I can only compare the Secret Key Gold Racoony patches to the ones that come wrapped individually. The box arrived a bit beaten so I couldn’t post a pretty photo =[ I found the illustration irresistible so I had to get it!

I normally never upload before and after photos because I am pretty self conscious about my no makeup face, but it doesn’t hurt to show just my sun spots and dark circles I suppose 😉 [Before and after shots are near the end] I always seem to have trouble updating as often because photobucket goes funny nowadays and doesn’t link the photo properly once I’ve cropped it on their website – so I have to give it time and by then my motivation to blog disappears. (I never used to have a problem with it a few months ago).

First Impression: I used this on my boyfriend first because I was curious and couldn’t wait to see how it performed. The only thing I noticed was how easily it continued to slide off for 5 minutes. It did eventually stay put after numerous tries. After trying it myself I didn’t feel to keen on using it further.

Second Impression: I was intrigued by how this can be dissolved in water – I find it dissolves best when you can shake it around in a little container of hot water. Don’t put too much water if you don’t want it too runny. It dissolves rather slowly, but sometimes if it is too runny I drop a condensed sheet mask in it.

Third Impression: I usually use masks and eye patches at night, but since I got back home from work at 2:30 am and couldn’t sleep til 4 am, I looked in the mirror after waking up and saw dark circles. I popped some on and I noticed it had a comfortable cooling feeling. After some time the mask shrank a little bit which made me feel that it sank into my skin.

Positive:

  • Affordable
  • Cute packaging
  • Includes a spatula
  • The packaging feels secure
  • Multi – purpose product
  • Dissolvable in hot water = no waste
  • Feels nice and cool upon application
  • Brightens the eye area

Negative:

  • It slides very easily due to the excess serum
  • You need a bit of time to adjust the patches as they slide off easily at the beginning
  • The shape isn’t perfect for any eye shape – eyes larger(wider) than mine may have trouble placing it close
  • Because there is no mesh to hold the shape, , if you leave it on too long (over 35-40 minutes) it can move your skin as it shrinks away

Ingredients: Sorry I can’t say as I can’t read what is on the box.

Weight: (consists of 60 eye patches and 30 spot patches)

Before & After: You can see my eyes have redness from 4 and a half hours sleep. Normally my eyes are more clear when I get to sleep 8 hours >=]

How I use this/tips:

  • At first I got sick of adjusting this, so I used it under a sheet mask to try and keep it in place. Eventually (after using it for over 3 weeks) it didn’t slide as much as there wasn’t as much serum stuck to it as time went on (each new patch).
  • If you find that you have too much serum left after adding hot water, you can add a compressed sheet mask 🙂 or soak some cotton eyes masks.
  • It is best to dissolve one patch at a time (I tried 2 and it took longer to dissolve – I find that dissolving one is enough if you want to apply it as a serum. Any excess I use where I need to like elbows etc etc.
  • I find it is best to leave it on for at least 25/30 minutes
  • I sometimes use this after applying all my skincare steps (first essence, toner, serum, eye cream, emulsion, cream) because I never realise how bad my eye area looks til the end or just after serum/emulsion
  • I don’t always use the spot patches for spots so I use them for my smile lines as well

Rating: 3.5/5

Repurchase: Most probably

Last words: I think that the two things the Secret Key Gold Racoony has over the Beyond eye patches is that it is a multipurpose product and very affordable. The downside about this product is that I don’t feel like the results were as obvious in terms of fine lines, so don’t expect a miracle, but it slightly brightened up the dark circles and made them look smoother(as you can see from the before and after shots 😦 ). I feel that I am still willing to spend my money on the beyond god of patches line because I’m getting older now and I do need the extra help. I feel that this definitely grew on me and I find myself reaching for it at least once a week. This is a product that doesn’t hurt to give a shot for dark circles when you’re on a small budget 🙂

Any questions or think I should add something to this post? Feel free to leave a comment =]

Review – Secret Key Snow White Cream

The first Secret Key product I have decided to throw onto this blog is the Snow White Cream. It says that it is a multitasking product that claims to be:

  1. Whitening [Yes]
  2. Moisturising [Slightly – upon application but it can feel a little drying after some time without prepping]
  3. a BB Cream [Not quite, coverage is light to almost non- existent like a base/primer which evens out the skin tone]
  4. a base [Yes]

First Impression: I thought to myself that I didn’t use it correctly or too much… or that I expected too much. It seemed to be a little drying and difficult to spread. Not a very good first impression.

Second Impression: I saw that there was a suggestion to mix it with a moisturiser, so I decided to mix it with a hydrating cream in winter (which I definitely recommend for those with drier skin types or if you are going to use this at night)

After continuous use: I guess you could say that this product really grew on me. I think the main factor is that my skin normally becomes oily, or discoloured or yellow/red/purple after 1 hour when I use other creams – but my face stayed relatively matte. I never needed to use any other makeup base or blotting sheets for about 4+ hours in winter 🙂

Whitening effects after usage for 2 weeks: I haven’t noticed any significant lightening of spots. My boyfriend said my face looks more pale nowadays.

Whitening effects after 3 months: WILL BE UPDATED NEAR THE END OF 2013 I purchased the upgrade and will post that review soon.

Weight: 50 g

Ingredients: Unfortunately I could not find one anywhere yet, even online, but what it doesn’t contain is listed in the positives section below.

Positives:

  • Comes with spatula ❤
  • 5 free formula – does not contain mineral oil, benzophenone, pigment, phenoxyethanol, parabens
  • Mixes well with Skinfood Honey Hydro Cream [Click to read my review on it] and other moisturisers (even with sleeping packs and ginseng creams)
  • Affordable price ❤
  • Light packaging (good for travel)
  • Decent oil control
  • Does not itch or sting when applied
  • Light scent which reminds me of baby powder

Negatives:

  • I feel it is a bit sticky, but on the upside it adheres well
  • If i reapply sometimes there seems to be white little bits on my face (which can be brushed away but it’s a bit annoying)
  • Not recommended for dry skin on it’s own (mix it with a hydrating cream)
  • If your skin is flaky it will be very obvious when you use this
  • Packaging feels a bit cheap – it makes the Etude House Collagen Moistfull Cream look expensive
  • No SPF (but personally i prefer it that way because I sometimes use this at night)

Rating: 3.3/5

Tips on Usage: The consistency isn’t really that of a moisturiser – it easily sticks to your hairline or eyebrows like the Skinfood Tomato Sun Cream SPF 36 PA++. Apply a small amount at time for best results (and so it blends into your skin more easily).

How I use this: After applying a first treatment essence, toner, and serum (I sometimes skip the emulsion in the morning) then use the Secret Key Snow White Cream. The only time i use this on its own without prepping beforehand is when I reapply when my face becomes oily in the T-zone.

Repurchase: Yes [I’ve already purchased another because I like the way it keeps the shine at bay – The other day, my boyfriends niece said “Why is your face so shiny?” on a day I wasn’t wearing any makeup and just applied supeeeer hydrating cream, so . T_T. …I like the secret key snow white cream now…]

Last words: If you are looking for coverage I suggest you look at CC Creams for light coverage or even BB Creams. I don’t think that this product covers or heals acne spots as well as BB creams have for my skin. The formula takes some getting used to because you can’t just slather it on quickly without a thought like most other creams and would probably be better in warmer months around October. The great thing is that this cream doesn’t break the bank (I think it was under $14 online – I bought a set which included the Snow White Milky Pack) and should suit most skin tones because it pretty much disappears from white to clear after blending. The key is to use a little at a time.
